S/V ALCYONE

The Survey Vessel “Alcyone” was acquired in 2009 by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and her construction and equipment (scientific, naval etc.) cost of approx. 1,196,500€ was founded by the South Aegean Regional Operational Program 2000-2006 (participation 76.68% of the EU European Regional Development Fund and 23.32% of the Greek State).

The capability of “Alcyone” to operate in shallow coastal areas combined with her cutting-edge scientific instrumentation and allow her to provide support for HCMR’s coastal research activities that include:

• classical oceanographic surveys,
• study of the water column
• geophysical seabed and habitat mapping and
• multidisciplinary marine environment’s monitoring programs.

S/V Alcyone is able to carry up to eight people plus the crew and to support the educational activities of H.C.M.R., targeting both the specialized training of scientists and also the transfer of knowledge about the sea and the awakening of environmental sensitization of the public.
